The Hidden Gems of Cincinnati [Guest Post]

First, a short introduction! I’m the Food Hussy, and I’ve been living in Cincinnati for nearly 10 years and blogging for 5 of those years! Through all these years, I have discovered all these little hidden gems — the places in the strip malls, off the beaten path or just places you’d never know about. And now I’m sharing them with you.

THE DINER  Frank’s Old Town Cafe

Diners are one of my favorite type of restaurants; I think I watched too many episodes of Alice as a kid. My favorite spot in the tri-state for this is most definitely Franks in downtown Covington, KY. Frank has all sorts of Buffalo Bills memorabilia around the restaurant. His wife is the main waitress, and they have daily specials like meatloaf. What more do I need to say?! My favorite is the Flying Pig  which is a breaded tenderloin (an Iowa specialty) with BBQ sauce and pickles on a bun. They also have great big crinkle fries that I pair with a side of mayo. Mmm Mmm Good! So head to Frank’s and tell him the Food Hussy sent you!

BREAKFAST — Bluebird Restaurant

Breakfast is one of my favorite meals  there’s such a wide variety of what you can have. My husband is allergic to eggs, so a good breakfast place has to have biscuits and gravy. We came across the Bluebird Restaurant in Norwood and never looked back. They have a wonderful staff and a great selection for breakfast  but oh those B&G! It’s a thick creamy white gravy served on flaky biscuits. And don’t miss the sausage links. DELISH!

SEAFOOD — Bayou Fish House

Crispy, fresh, flavorful seafood  not much can outdo that. One of my more recent discoveries is the Bayou Fish House in Newport. They serve different fish each day along with some steady options. The fish is lightly breaded and really crispy. Fish tacos are one of my favorites  which you can often find for 99 cents! Also, don’t miss out on the Bayou Bites: little pepper rings, breaded and fried with a spicy sauce!

BURGER Quatman Cafe

Sometimes you just need a simple burger. One so simple it could be served on a paper plate and still have you drooling for more. Quatman Cafe in Norwood fits that bill. QC used to be a grocery store; now it’s a restaurant and bar with a simple deli. The burgers are thick, juicy and topped with a thick slice of Land o’Lakes American cheese! On the side, skinny fries of course. If I ever get hungry for a burger, my husband doesn’t even ask, he just hits the lateral and takes me to Quatman Cafe. And grab some chicken salad on your way out  you won’t be disappointed.

ETHNIC PT.1 — Dusmesh Indian Restaurant

I thought I had a favorite Indian place in town  until I tried Dusmesh. Located in a converted house right near Cincinnati State, it is NOT to be missed. Continue reading…

Preview: Jersey Shore Restaurant Week 2013

Jersey Shore Restaurant Week

Atlantic City Boardwalk on a postcard, circa 1913-1916.

After being cancelled last Fall due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, Jersey Shore Restaurant Week returns today with more than 60 restaurants participating. Patrons can enjoy 3-course prix-fixe dinners (for $20 and $30) at a wide variety of eateries up and down the Shore. The Asbury Park Press bills it as “an event that will showcase a rejuvenated culinary scene along a rebuilt coastline.”

In addition to restaurant specials, JSRW has its own food events, including a bacon tasting called “Eat. Drink. Indulge. Bacon.” Guests will be able to try gourmet bacon dishes and “bacon-inspired” cocktails created by baconeer chef, Jimmy Vena.

Restaurant Weeks like the one in Jersey Shore have been popping up across the country. Owners use them to showcase their restaurants and attract new business during off-seasons, while diners get the chance to try a variety of cuisines at affordable fixed prices. Local food communities benefit from new connections being formed between owners, diners and area food writers.

– Jersey Shore Restaurant Week –

Many restaurants in JSRW accept online reservations through OpenTable.
Dates: November 8th – 17th, 2013
Participating Restaurants: More than 60. Full List.

Top restaurants with online delivery in Elizabeth NJ

Looking for online food delivery near Elizabeth, New Jersey? At BringMeThat, we recently added more than 2,300 NJ restaurants to our online food delivery service, including 25 in Elizabeth

Simply enter your location to browse restaurant menus, compare prices and quickly place delivery orders through the Web. No phone needed!

Here’s a guide to some of the best delivery options in the Elizabeth area:

Algarve Restaurant | Portuguese Food
656 Van Buren Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07201

“Self-described healthy barbeque and Portuguese cuisine. Algarve Restaurant offers a range of food, from Frog Legs, to Filet Mignon, to pasta and seafood options [..] I can see why this is a local hot spot.  If I lived closer to Elizabeth, I’d certainly be a frequent visitor. The prices are just right (less than $20 for grilled Chilean Sea Bass!) and the seafood seemed surprisingly fresh; I no doubt underestimated the freshness from this unassuming restaurant in the middle of Elizabeth.” (Bergen County Foodie)

Don Julio Restaurant | Cuban / Hispanic / American
50 Marshall St, Elizabeth, NJ 07206

“Don Julio, a neighborhood restaurant facing the Elizabeth waterfront, is the perfect place to sample Peruvian “Chifa” cuisine. Chifa, from the Mandarin “to eat rice,” is the name for the distinctly Peruvian versions of Chinese food originating in Peru’s immigrant Chinatowns […] Winning options off the Peruvian menu include the ceviche de pescado and a ginger-inflected seafood soup.” (Ethnic Food NJ)

Michelino’s Pizzeria | Pizza / Italian Food
169 Washington Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07202

“Great Pizza! Our favorite. No other can compare near to Michelino’s. Even for my boyfriend who has an Italian born and raised palette. I hope this will not change. A neighborhood gem. Bravo!” (iDine)

Tequila’s Grill | Mexican / Hispanic / Bar / Grill
824 Pearl St, Elizabeth, NJ 07202

“Food is delicious and savory with the sense that you truly are getting a real Mexican experience and nothing made up or cookie cut as you would in most Mexican restaurants in the tri-state area.” (Yelp!)

Seaport Diner | Greek / Irish / Deli / Sandwiches
798 Dowd Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07201

“This diner looks like it is straight out of Goodfellas. It’s the stereotype of diners. The food is amazing. The Greek salad I ordered was delicious. Fresh feta, and vegetables and a great authentic tasting dressing. The others people at my table got a Reuben and a Philly cheesesteak by with which they were both impressed. Friendly quick service. Great food. Cheap prices. What’s not to love?” (UrbanSpoon)

Bella Pizza | Pizza / Pastas / Italian Food / Burgers / Seafood
5 Broad St, Elizabeth, NJ 07201

Best restaurants offering online delivery in Newark

We currently deliver from more than 53 restaurants in the Newark area. Here’s a guide to some of the best options:

Hobby’s Delicatessen | Deli / Sandwiches / Vegetarian / Soups
32 Branford Pl, Newark, NJ 07102

“I finally made my first stop to Hobby’s and what a delicious experience it was […]The corned beef is pickled on the premises, and perfectly scrumptious, salty, moist, and robust.  Each bite is faintly accompanied by a subtle “squish” sound, owing to the fine craftsmanship and delicate texture of the sliced meat.  To dress it up a bit – and this is encouraged, I promise – I slap on some of Hobby’s wonderfully spicy mustard which acts as the perfect sidekick to it all.  A brilliant combination.  The bread is fresh, sturdy, but not overwhelming or distracting towards the meat.  Really an amazing sandwich.” (John and Elana)

Delicias De Minas Restaurant | Brazilian food / Buffet
168 Mcwhorter St, Newark, NJ 07105

“This is a terrific find in Newark. Superb Brazilian quasi-buffet – some vegetables and fish dishes on a traditional buffet table, but the best & freshest offerings are at the carving station. Continue reading…

Center Avenue Slice | Pizza / Salad / Soup / Italian Food
332 Center Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15229

“The pizza came quickly. It was hot and delicious. The crust was crusty and chewy (I love a good pizza crust) and well cooked. The sausage was by far some of the best I have had on a pizza. The cheese pulled for miles as you lifted a slice off the pan. There were so many toppings that they fall off as you pull a slice.” (New-Burghers Food Blog)

Rose Tea Cafe | Taiwanese Food / Tea & Beverages / Asian Food

BringMeThat now feeding Pennsylvania

BringMeThat is officially live in Pennsylvania! We’re now offering online food delivery from 2,000 restaurants in hundreds of cities across the Keystone State. By simply entering their address, hungry users from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to Altoona can browse restaurants near them and place delivery orders entirely online.

For a long time, ordering delivery has been a sloppy process. Customers have had to hunt one-by-one for restaurants, hope they could find menus and prices somewhere and then go through the tedious process of placing the order via phone. With online food delivery, restaurant data is aggregated and easily searchable. Users can see menus, prices, order minimums and delivery fees. Instead of calling, customers can place orders through a quick and simple online checkout system. At BringMeThat, customer service representatives are on-call to handle any concerns.

Pennsylvania online food delivery

While some national companies offer this type of service in big cities like Philadelphia, they generally do not cover small-and-medium sized cities. In addition to serving large metros, BringMeThat aims to support small, local restaurants in underserved areas by driving orders from the Web.

BringMeThat, which debuted in Ohio at the beginning of the year, has just completed a Spring session at the Triangle Startup Factory in Durham, North Carolina — the leading startup incubator in the Southeast. With the expansion into PA, BringMeThat is now active in four states (OH, NC, PA and NJ) and offers delivery from 7,500 restaurants.

Looking forward, BringMeThat will be expanding its service to the entire East Coast en route to becoming national.

BringMeThat at Paradoxos 2013

BringMeThat CEO Jason Liang presented our company’s pitch to investors today at the 2013 Paradoxos in Durham, NC. Paradoxos is a two-day festival — loosely fashioned after events like TED and SXSW — that showcases local startups and features talks by innovators in the tech and entrepreneurial worlds. Paradoxos is billed as “a two-day festival celebrating the power of ideas, collaboration, and what’s to come.” It’s not all business, though; the festival also includes block parties with local beer and food trucks.

Notable speakers include Paul Singh (500 Startups,, Scott Case (Startup America), John Biggs (TechCrunch) and Chris Heivly (Triangle Startup Factory).

What people are saying:

Liang spoke to the investor crowd about BringMeThat’s online food delivery service. With BringMeThat, users simply enter their address to begin browsing restaurants that deliver to them. Orders can then be placed entirely online. BringMeThat hopes to serve small and medium-sized cities and rural areas across the country and so far has 5,000 restaurant listings across OH, NC and PA.

If you’re in the Triangle, check out Paradoxos (#pdxs2013). The festival will run through Friday, June 7 in downtown Durham.
